Installing the Actian ZEN SQL database
Hypersoft uses the ACTIAN ZEN SQL database, one of the most powerful SQL databases available, which is ideal for medium-sized companies. Currently, the database is to be used in version 14.
A server version of the database should be installed on Windows Server operating systems. Up to five clients of the database can be networked without a server version. Concurrent accesses are counted, but not all Hypersoft programmes use direct (own) SQL accesses; the differentiation is described in the section Actian ZEN Database Licences.

Compatibility and mixed versions at different locations
The database is further developed by the manufacturer Actian and regularly has new versions.
- Within a network, these versions can be compatible because the data format is designed or can be set for compatibility. You can use this compatibility, for example, if you have several locations or have purchased Hypersoft systems in different years for other reasons.
- In the case of transfers with web clearing, for example between locations and the head office, the data is adapted to the respective database version by web clearing.
Limitations of the ZEN versions...
- Version 8.6 (discontinued) has a different data structure and is also slower. Only subsequent versions can therefore work in compatibility mode.
- Versions 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 use the same data format and can be used simultaneously.
There are only restrictions if you are working with the old SQL version 11: Version 11 as a server only requires version 11 as a workgroup. Workgroup 11 is also not compatible with the workgroups of the higher versions 12.13 and 14. So if you have an existing system with Actian SQL 11 and want to extend it, ask us for versions 11 that are still available or upgrade to a higher version.
VPN is not a supported standard for SQL...
Our programmes are tested in LAN and WLAN, but not when they are connected via VPN. Web clearing and point-of-sale clearing are suitable for connecting. Overall, we strongly advise against connecting the SQL database via VPN.
If your installation works via VPN, you are responsible. If there are problems, you must inform our support that you are using VPN. Support may refuse to process with the use of VPN and you may then need to implement the Hypersoft installation without VPN in order for our work to continue.
Current and previous versions of the database
Hypersoft works on updates in such a way that they remain compatible with a database version for a long time. Of course it can be useful for performance reasons or for better support to install a database update after a few years.
The following database versions from Actian ZEN are approved for use with Hypersoft. The respective service packs are also important for compatibility. If you are using a different version or service pack, we strongly recommend that you install the versions listed below to ensure the smooth and secure operation of Hypersoft. When you replace older versions with current ones, performance enhancements can clearly emerge in speed. Database versions that are older than the V10 will no longer be supported from 2020.
In general, however, the most current version of the SQL database does not always have to be used. In certain cases, it may also be useful to use mixed versions, this applies both to cross-site installations with central control and to network systems with servers and clients. For this purpose, the databases can be set to perform and reliably compatible within a certain version. Settings for operating different versions should only be made with your dealer and Hypersoft.
The SQL Control Center is included as a control tool for database management and in the MCP. The use takes place exclusively on instruction of Hypersoft. If necessary, block the program from unauthorized access.
Improper use of the SQL Control Center may result in damage that restricts or prevents use of the Hypersoft Suite. Under certain circumstances, such damages cannot be corrected or require services subject to a charge.
