Actian ZEN Database Licences
The unique combination of cloud technology and local CloudEngine is a unique security and performance concept from Hypersoft. Further details are described in the System landscape and installation section.
Introduction and Background
Hypersoft uses a SQL database licence which Hypersoft also has to purchase for you per user. This NO SQL database is highly recognised worldwide for medium data processing (and thus for use in sophisticated POS systems). Not Only SQL technology is considered a leading database technology worldwide. As an alternative to professional databases, you could develop your own solutions for storing and evaluating data or use free SQL databases for this purpose.
- The development of our own database is neither economically nor technically justifiable - smaller POS solutions may have implemented this technically up to a certain limit, but for our target group and our quality standards this is out of the question.
- Free SQL databases have several risks (like almost all "free" programs). Many are designed in such a way that costs are incurred after a certain demand, the rules are "surprisingly" changed, or your "provider" will not fully inform you, so that you may even unknowingly use "pirated copies" (is commercial use free of charge with them too?). Who wants to guarantee security when an open source community is leading the development? Who is the contact person for urgent questions or problems? Most free SQL databases are so little protected that there are a lot of "tools" with which you can change the data even as a layman - who then takes over the GoBD/GDPdU guarantee for unchangeability of data in case of emergency?

Total cost of ownership refers to the average costs incurred during a period of use. It is more about the cost of repairs and associated inconveniences such as loss of services. Thus, the indication of low TCO is usually an indication of devices with extremely low interference.). The use of Actian ZEN by technically advanced companies (such as the US space agency NASA) or in the health sector in Germany (cardiology computers) speaks for the high reliability.
Licences and rights regarding Actian ZEN SQL
Until the end of 2022, Hypersoft programme licences did not include ZEN database licences. With the new Hypersoft UX System, the important basic licences also receive their database licence. One database licence is included in each of the following Hypersoft licences:

Some other Hypersoft programmes such as Stock Management also require database licences. If these work on the same ward that already has a database licence, no further database licence is required. If, for example, you install the disposition monitor or goods receipt booking on a separate PC, you need our database licences for each additional PC.
You may be able to transfer Actian database licences to new hardware at a later date. Certain conditions, such as updates to Windows, Hypersoft, and other involved components, may require the use of a more current version of the database (previously only at intervals of several years), which is not included in Hypersoft's software maintenance agreement, and may result in additional costs. Up to now, it was only necessary about every 10 years, which is why we refrained from including the database as standard in the software maintenance contract.
Connection "without" server...
Every computer running a Hypersoft checkout or MCP requires a database license. Up to 5 PCs can be connected without a server. The database of a PC or one of the PCs is determined as a "server" and used by the other devices in this way. The number of necessary simple licenses (client/workgroup) is counted once per device and once per device connected to this "server". For three devices this would be 3 + 2 = 5 Client/Workgroup licenses. Hypersoft also offers special bundles here.
The number of connections to a file share that is regulated by Windows must also be considered (example: 20 users for the Windows 7 Professional system).
You can also install workgroup licenses on a server and use it without a special server database license. Technically, the installation with a server database is much more powerful.
Data sharing...
If more than 5 PCs in a network are to work together with SQL databases, a so-called server database licence of the database must be purchased additionally. The server version replaces on the server both the own Client/Workgroup license, still further licenses become necessary then on the server. Each connected PC running a Hypersoft checkout or MCP needs "its" client/workgroup license and the server needs a server license for the number of computers in the network (it counts itself). Licenses are available in levels 6, 10, 20, 50, 100 and more on request. You can also purchase these licenses later as supplementary licenses (if your program version is still current) and thus simply increase the number 6+10= 16.
Examples of licensing...
Versions between V10 to V15 are supported. From V10 onwards, the data model is compatible with each other and you can install mixed versions. As previously described, with the Hypersoft UX series we supply simple workgroup licences per POS and MCP workstation. For example, if you want to connect two cash registers and an MCP workstation, then one database is defined "as server / main cash register" and the other two access it. All three have an Actian Workgroup licence in the Hypersoft UX version, but in order to connect the two devices to the "server", Actian ZEN requires two additional users, so-called User Count Increase licences, or UCI licences for short.

What do I need ACTIAN SQL licences for?
Depending on how the programmes are constructed, they require an SQL licence on the devices. See which licences have this requirement and which do not need this SQL licence. Our cloud programmes use server-based SQL licences that you do not need to purchase. You see Technical licence table.

If the Windows server on which the server database is also installed provides RDP clients, one user of the server database is used per RDP client. But no further Workgroup User is needed.
Workgroup License: The Workgroup License consists of a Client Interface and an Engine Interface. The client is used for communication with a remote engine. The engine takes care of the local database operation on the device on which the license is installed. The engine of a workgroup can connect up to five remote clients. In addition to the number of five, a server installation/version of the database is required. A very simplified graphic (other variants are also possible):
The HSLOCAL database structure is only required if the station is a main cash register, "C: / C:" has been set or the station type "cash register station" has been selected in the station setting.
Variant Activity groups
To use different configurations or duplicate activity numbers within a client, the variant Activity groups. These groups represent additional network accesses and require additional database licenses.
